PUFF is a non-profit organisation under Section 88 of Hong Kong Inland Revenue.  All our programs are free.  The festival is run by a dedicated group of volunteers of film directors and curators.  Please visit our store or donate to become a patron to support indie films.  

PUFF strives to give filmmakers a chance to shine and to tell their stories.  PUFF looks for the latest art house & experimental films that are not afraid to break the status quo narratives.  Now in it's 10th year, we had screened over 250 films from more than 30 countries.

PUFF Indie Award 2018

Reema Sengupta is a writer-director based in Mumbai. She has directed documentaries, stop-motion animation projects, interactive video installations, and narrative films spanning across India, UK, South Korea and the US. She was one of 24 filmmakers from all over Asia to be awarded the prestigious Asian Film Academy Fellowship (2012), where she represented India and co-directed a short film at the Busan International Film Festival. The International Green Screen Lab 2012 (supported by British Council, Goethe Institute, Cinekid, etc) selected Reema's first feature film script for development. 

Reema's first short-film as writer director- 'The Tigers, They're all Dead', a political satire set in Mumbai, won fourteen awards, including the IDPA Award for Excellence 2013,  

In 2011, Reema completed an internship with Warp Films, an award-winning British production house. The same year, she headed the PR and Media department for Harvard University's first Model United Nations Conference in India, with over 1000 delegates from 5 countries.

Reema graduated from the course B.A. (Hons.) Contemporary Media Practice from the University of Westminster, London in 2012, with first class honours. She was awarded the 'Achievement Award' for academic excellence by the University of Westminster in the year 2011-2012. 

In 2014, Reema co-founded CATNIP, a production house that specializes in video content focussed on music. CATNIP has conceptualized and created the video content for Bacardi Nh7 Weekender 2015 & 2016, Vh1 Supersonic Goa 2014 & 2015, The Lost Party 2016, Stage 42 Festival 2016, Nucleya's Bass Rani & Raja Baja EP Launch as well as made aftermovies for international artists like Skrillex, Steve Aoki, Above & Beyond, Dada Life, Alix Perez, among others.

Could you tell us here in a few sentences about the music or sound design of this film ?   How did you interpret the narrative of the film ?  What is the collaboration like between yourself and the director. 

The director is Minah Jung, a female director. She worked on a documentary that was about my life and we became great friends since then. That documentary was about how my family were human trafficked slaves and how we gained our freedom.

The director and I trust each other very much and share the same vision of increasing Asian representation in media.


This is the Composer Joel Berger's statement about writing the score for June's Atonement:

"When approaching the score, the first step was to establish a theme for each character. I believe that a character’s theme is the best way for a composer to tell a story through the audio in an attempt to deepen the connection between the audience and the character.

 

I was given the characters initially and learned their traits, and from that I established themes and basic instrumentation. For example, I saw June as innocent and chose a flute to give an atmosphere of purity. At more sensitive moments, her theme is only embellished by light strings and an oboe, but at more dramatic moments, I felt that a larger string section and a choir would give her more power and strength, while still preserving her innocence and purity with the 
flute.

 

Clayton is represented by a more foreboding piece that we hear first played by a bass and a music box to build intimidation and suspense, and later as a fuller, more frantic ensemble as he reacts in turn. All the music serves to enhance what is happening on screen and add new dimensions to the story through sound. Movement on film is mirrored by movement in the music, which to me is the key difference between music and a score."
